Advertising effectiveness is usually understood and explained in terms of its ability to influence consumers’ opinions and behaviours. But in the same way as consumers’ every basic action is taken unconsciously in response to our physical micro environment and the need to maintain natural balance – then so is the way we react to advertising.
This is not to deny or diminish the role of conventional economics and marketing in explaining behaviour but we need first to take account of the natural and instinctive factors. When we experience advertising for a product, the immediate response is determined by whether or not the product is relevant to our need to maintain life. If our physical micro environment is such that there is a need to restore balance in some way then this will be manifest as an instant, unconscious and natural desire for that product – or specifically the nutrient or homeostatic benefit delivered by that product.
At this point there will be neuronal flow from the hypothalamus across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) into our brain which deals with thought, learning, emotion and memory. The natural instinctive desire will then become experienced as a recognisable interest in or demand for that product.
